What do I purchase when I buy stocks on eToro?

Please note that eToro uses CFDs for stock trading, and a CFD stands for Contract for Difference. CFDs are specialized and popular Over The Counter (OTC) financial products that allow traders to easily take broad market positions in a variety of different financial markets. This means that when you close your position, eToro will pay you the amount representing the difference between your BUY and SELL price for each stock.  It also means that we are obligated to follow price movements, and look at our client’s P&L according to what really happened in the market on the same instrument which allows trading indices, commodities and other instruments without actually buying all the stocks of a specific index or a physical commodity.

Keep in mind that you do not actually own the stocks or hold any rights shareholders have.

What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a highly volatile digital currency that can result in large price fluctuations throughout the day.eToro offers Bitcoin as a long term investment to its users. Therefore, Bitcoin is traded on our platform in the form of a CFD (Contract for Difference). As of April 12th, you are now able to trade Bitcoin in real-time! With real-time Bitcoin trading, you’ll enjoy a better trading experience:• Open both long and short positions (short positions will incur a credit rollover)• React quicker to market changes• Closely manage your positions• Take advantage of leveraged trading * For all future real-time stocks with a leverage of x2 or more, a rollover fee of 0.05% will be applied on all open Bitcoin positions on the platform.  All future positions will be eligible for leveraged trading. Existing positions will remain without leverage (at 1x). * It important to note the we do not offer bitcoin as a depositing /withdrawal method. Traders should be aware of the risks associated with real-time trading and are asked to closely monitor their trades throughout the day.

How can I close/sell my stock position(s)?

To sell your positions, simply:

Featured Site

  1. Log into your account and click on “Portfolio“.
  2. Click on the instrument line you wish to close.

How do I know how much I’m going to pay per stock?

Invest as little as $25 in any stock – we still offer fraction share investment, which means that you can invest as much as you want, no matter what the share price is.

You are now able to open a position on any of the 230 stocks currently offered on our platform, in real-time, using our trading platforms (be it the Webtrader, or our Mobile Trader Apps).

That means instant trade execution, which will enable you to take advantage of intraday price movements on stocks.

Each stock will come with a buy and sell price, which means a spread between the two. However, stocks don’t have fixed spreads, the difference between the bid and ask prices is determined by market participants (buyers and sellers) – therefore the spread you will see on eToro will also change according to market conditions.

Buying stock CFDs entails paying a small holding fee. The holding fee (similar to the rollover fee in currency markets) will be charged once a day. You will be able to see all holding fees listed on our fees page

Note that there will be no holding fees charged for unleveraged long positions (leverage of x1).

It’s important to notice that with this change, the amount allocated to an order will not be available for trading, since the order amount will be considered as “reserved” equity unless you should cancel the order.

Orders

A pending order (or limit order) is an order placed in the system aimed to execute into a Position  once your selected target rate or better is reached. An order will be executed if the current market rate of an instrument reaches the selected target  rate and it can be executed within a range from this rate depending on market movements and  volatility. These type of orders will stay opened until they get executed or you decide to close them. For more details regarding the Order Tab, please click here.

Pending stocks

When opening a stock order while the market is closed, it will show as “pending” until the market opens. Fore the markets opening times, please click here.  ( Don’t forget to adjust the time zone to GMT +00:00). Please also be aware that your trade will be executed at the first available market rate.

Real Time Stocks

Stock trading at eToro has so far been done through orders gathered and then executed in daily batches.

On April 19th, all of this was changed.

From now on, you will be able to open a position on any of the 230 stocks currently offered on our platform, in real-time, using our trading platforms (be it the Webtrader, or our Mobile Trader apps).

That means immediate trade execution, which will enable you to take advantage of intraday price movements on stocks, just like you do on every other instrument.

Integrating real-time stock trading across our systems has multiple advantages. You are now able to:

– Open both Long (BUY) and Short (SELL) positions on all stocks.

– Leverage your stock trades by x2, or use no leverage (x1) like you did before – it’s up to you!

– Open and close stock positions from the WebTrader, and from the Mobile Trader app – without going through the eToro OpenBook.

– Use Stop Loss and Take Profit orders to limit losses, and lock in profits and edit them 24/7.

– Trade 24/7 – when the markets are closed your trade will generate an order which will be executed as soon as the markets open

Yes. Unlike the traditional exchange markets, eToro allows you to invest as much or as little as you like in your favorite stocks, even if the amount is less than the relevant stock price.

Example:  if you invest $10 in Microsoft, and at the time of execution eToro’s  average price was $30 after a spread of 0.1%, you will then have a CFD representing 0.33 stocks of Microsoft in your eToro account.
